(TEG) Triethylene Glycol
Formula: C6H14O4
Molecular Formula: HOCH2CH2OCH2CH2OCH2CH2OH
Triethylene glycol is a transparent, colorless, low volatility, moderate-viscosity, water-soluble liquid. Under normal conditions, there is no detectable odor; under high vapor concentrations, a slightly sweet odor may be detected. It is completely miscible with water and many organic liquids. Triethylene glycol has properties similar to other glycols and may be used preferentially in applications requiring a higher boiling point, higher molecular weight or lower volatility than
diethylene glycol. See Figure 1 for Freeze Points.

The hydroxyl groups on triethylene glycol undergo the usual alcohol chemistry giving a wide variety of possible derivatives. Hydroxyls can be converted to aldehydes, alkyl halides, amines, azides, carboxylic acids, ethers, mercaptans, nitrate esters, nitriles, nitrite esters, organic esters, peroxides, phosphate esters and sulfate esters.

TEG is the most used means in the oil and gas industry for dehydration of water from natural gas.
